Last time (video) the Valentine One and the Escort 9500ci were running simultaneously to compare all 3 radar detectors. This time, to eliminate any possibility of interference to the Escort Redline by the Valentine One, only the Escort Redline was powered up. The result - even when mounted vertically, the Escort Redline was roughly half the range of the Valentine One at detecting the low powered, polarized 34.3GHz radar signal from the speed camera. Conclusion: Whilst the Redline would be suited for use outside of Western Australia (where there are NO Multanova 6F speed cameras in use), I do not recommend on relying on a Redline for suitable speed camera warning within WA - which is the only state in Australia that uses the Multanova 6F speed cameras. I won't be trading in my V1 for an Escort Redline anytime soon...

The task of this robot is to collect small metalic objects (such as batteries) which lie on the ground. The robot has to do so, while avoiding the collision with stationary objects and be able to navigate through complex enviroments. To search and collect the metalic objects, the robot is equiped with a small metal detecting circuit (based on induction). This offers a small rang of metal detection (aprox. 4 cm). The metal detector is placed on a long rod, which rotates 90 degrees. Therefore, the detector can locate metalic objects, anywhere in front of the robot. When a metalic object is detected, the rod's head (where the metal detector is placed) turns 180 degrees, and a big electromagnet now faces the metalic object. When the object is collected by the electromagnet, it is then released on a special platform which is deployed from the base of the robot. To avoid any collision with other objects (such as furniture), the robot uses an ultrasonic range detector (radar) as well as 2 side infrared range detectors. The radar, placed on top of the robot, searches the area infront of the moving robot for obstacles. If one is located within close proximity (30cm), the radar scans the area (rotates with the use of a motor) for any other possible paths which contain no obstacles within range. I came up with this idea because I was getting annoyed of keep on removing the detector when not driving and mounting it back when I drive. Obviously you don't want it to sit on your windshield in full view, that would be an invitation for theft. I put it up high, which is much less noticeable. I'm lazy, I don't want to constantly taking it off and mounting it back everytime I drive. I did some research and the best place to detect radar is as high as possible on the windshield, however it is the worst place for detecting laser. The best spot to detect laser is the lowest point on the windshield as cops aim at the front of your car not the windshield, but then again it will be the worst place for detecting radar because radar do not penetrate so well through metal. The expert recommend the middle of the windshield for the balance of detecting both radar and laser however putting it in the middle meaning you would have to remove them when not in use. It's semi-permanent because you can still remove it if you want to.

And, if DHS claims are to be believed, the research appears to be getting somewhere. At an equestrian centre in Maryland, 140 paid volunteers walked through a pair of trailers kitted out with a battery of FAST sensors, including cameras, infrared heat sensors and an eyesafe laser radar, called a Bio-Lidar, that measures pulse and breathing rate from a distance. Some subjects were told to act shifty, be evasive, deceptive and hostile. And many were detected. "We're still very early on in this research, but it is looking very promising," says DHS science spokesman John Verrico.
